HERB RITTS: MEN/WOMEN is one of the most successful photographic portfolios Twin Palms/Twelvetrees Publishers ever created. It is a cloth bound, two volume set - one title MEN and the other titled WOMEN - and the two are slipcased together in an elegant manner so characteristic of this fine art publishing firm.'Herbert "Herb" Ritts (August 13, 1952 - December 26, 2002) was an American fashion photographer who concentrated on black-and-white photography and portraits in the style of classical Greek sculpture. Consequently some of his more famous pieces are of male and female nudes in what can be called glamour photography.' So the dictionary defines this artist. But Ritts was one of most influential photographers of his time, producing very famous images of Richard Gere, Madonna, Merce Cunningham, Francesco Clemente and many others, but he was also in top form in his ad photography for such companies as Calvin Klein - his famous shot of Mark Wahlberg when he was known as Marky Mark in just brief underwear started that stars climbing career. But this book is devoted to his less celebrity-focused imagery and more emphasizing the magnificent nude and near nude models. Not only does he focus on extraordinary faces here, but he also elects to focus on the trunks and full body images of both men and women, scenes by the water with various oceanic accoutrements, images using veils and other drapery in elegant softness and at the same time offering iconic men in factory worker photographs that define the Ritts male ideal physique. It is a book where every page is worth of framing for any home, gallery or museum.Ritts was very famous during his too short life (he succumbed to pneumocystis pneumonia secondary to AIDS at age 50), but his art is so established throughout the world that his gift for photography has joined the ranks of the greats. This is an extraordinary gallery of images. Grady Harp, February 11
